Green on Green

Description

This is a green heron overlooking one of the many bogs in the Great Swamp at first light. Green herons are tiny wading birds that sit absolutely still, sometimes an hour or so at a time. Shooting them once you manage to get close to them isn't hard, finding them is. They can be very frustrating because with their perfect marshland camouflage, they're often perched right in front of you and you can't see them. This bird was so still, that I was able to stop down and use a 1/30 of a second shutter speed.

Ryan this is a superb shot that defines patience and skill. Seriously man. Everything works so well here. I love the blurred, muted background and in contrast, the twigs and the heron and the twig stand out brilliantly.

Often wildlife photogs don't have alot of control over the landscape and so we often get funny twigs in places we didn't see when we took the shot. This isn't the case here. The branches that the heron is sitting on lead the viewer in the scene splendidly. The eyes go from the heron to the branch he's sitting on and then to the swampy environment.

The only thing I would have liked to have seen done here was a very minute use of fill flash to bring up the shadows on the bird. Just very very slightly...but

As is, I rank this shot with 5 stars all around. Mazel tov!
