The final round of Senior announcements for 2009!
Artist's Comments
This was one of a small group of yellow warblers nesting along the fens. For this shot, I tried something different. I wanted to get the bird interacting with its environment instead of just another close up shot of a perched bird. The yellow warbler is the most extensively yellow of any species of bird, and is only four to five inches in length. This species is really friggin small, so I'm not as far away from it as it looks.

Critiques
The depth of field creates a soft backdrop for such a small creature, underlining it's fragility but also letting it stand out clearly. The clear focus manages to highlight the bird as well as its immediate surroundings (i.e. the perch it's sitting on). The nails in the wood give a good indication of the size of the bird and add a certain roughness which contrasts well with the soft plumage of the bird and give it a sense of innocence.
This is a picture of contrast (the yellow small bird, as opposed to the dark, rough wood and nails) and harmony (the glorious colours all around the bird) and yet it's very clear what the main subject is.
The branch on the right hand side looks like an invitation to the bird, as its next resting place or simply the beckoning hand of nature, calling the bird to explore further. For this reason it is good that it's in sharp focus.
I think this is one of the best "animal in its habitat" pictures I've seen and I cannot find fault with it. Congratulations on a great photograph!
This image is solid on every aspect. Its focused where it needs to be focused and colors are only as saturated as they should be. I think the thing that really makes this shot is the darker foliage behind the bird. Had it been light leaves, like much of the rest of the photo contains, I don't this shot would have been powerful. But, you nailed this!
This shot makes me think of looking out of a cottage window in the middle of the woods. Crisp, clear, and brilliant!
