Although capable of hammering on tree trunks like other Woodpeckers, the Northern Flicker prefers to dig on the ground for ants, their favorite food. This Flicker contently dug for ants as I inched up to it on my stomach. After it was finished, it took off to a nearby tree. With spring migration just about over, I've been starting to try and improve my shots of species like this that I had been ignoring for the past month.

I think I had one fo these guys in my backyard once when we had a birdfeeder! I recongized it as a Flicker right away because me and my mom went to the local nursury were they were having a presnetation on different local backyard birds and feeders.

Nice picture!

Hehe, I'm looking at one right now. Except it's much bigger and fatter...what a large beak. :D

Real good low-angle shot, Ryan.
Ever try simply walking slowly straight towards them? Works surprisingly well most times to within 50ft or better.

Thanks man!

50ft isn't close enough for 400mm at least in my opinion hah, need to get closer
