While owling in the middle of the night during an organized bird survey on Cape Cod, a few friends and I carefully counted 16 Eastern Screech Owls in our designated area, including this great looking red morph bird. Documenting these birds at night by anything other sound recording is extremely difficult, as photographing them involves a carefully placed flashlight and a slow shutter speed. Also, although photographing them can be fun, light must be used with caution, to prevent majorly stressing out the owl. If you need to document them, do so fast, and shut your light off as soon as you can. At only six to nine inches long, the Eastern Screech Owl is still a force to be reckoned with. They are songbird eating specialists, with the ability to hunt birds as large as Blue Jays in the dead of night. They are absolutely silent flyers, so when/if their prey notices their presence, it's usually far too late. Despite the fact that most people have never actually seen a Screech Owl in the wild, they are extraordinarily abundant.
